Files.-Files and similar tools are sharpened by sprinkling upon them a limited amount of acid and placing them in such a position that the acid acts only or mainly at the bottom and on the front side of the teeth. When the acid becomes inactive the files are cleaned and the process repeated. The apparatus comprises a box 1 in which is a movable plate 9 mounted on rollers 10. The plate 9 and the top 2 of the box 1 are perforated to receive the tangs of the files. By moving the plate 9, the files may be held vertically or inclined to either side of the vertical. An acid container 17, mounted on rails 16 above the files, is provided with a sprinkling pipe 19. The cleaned files are placed in an inclined position as shown and the container 17 traversed in one direction to sprinkle one side of the files. The inclination of the files is then reversed and the container traversed in the opposite direction to sprinkle the other side of the files. The files are then placed in the vertical position so that the acid collects at the bottom and on the front sides of the teeth.
