Abstract

1328488 Injection blow-moulding SHOWA DENKO KK and NISSEI PLASTIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 8 July 1971 [10 July 1970 30 Dec 1970 29 June 1971] 32029/71 Heading B5A To achieve close control of the blow-moulding temperature in a process of injection-blow moulding hollow closed-ended articles, a parison is injection moulded about a core, cooled, removed from the core, reheated to a predetermined temperature and transferred to a blow mould where the parison is stretched by a pin within the parison before or during blow moulding. A suitable apparatus comprises three concentric discs 1, 2, 3, the middle disc 2 being rotatable and carrying holders 8, 9, 10 for parisons 11, and the upper and lower discs 1, 3 being vertically movable and carrying parts which engage on either side of the holders 8, 9, 10 to form an injection mould A, a heating device C and a blow mould B, spaced at 120 degree intervals around the discs. In use molten plastics, e.g. polypropylene or an ethylene/propylene co-polymer, is injected through passage 6 and between the core 4 and mould 12 (Fig. 3B). The parison 11 so formed is carried by holder 8 to the heating device C by rotation of disc 2. Both the core 5 and the outer part 13 of the heating device may contain heating elements. The heated parison is carried round to the blow mould B where a rod 7 extends into the cavity of the two-part blow mould 14, 15 to stretch the parison, Fig. 3b. When the rod 7 is introduced at the heating stage C the rim of the parison is gripped between support 23 and holder 8 and the parison is moved to the blow moulding stage B in this condition by the top disc 1 rotating with the middle disc 2.
