1328090 Film fibrillation SHELL, INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 23 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 63034/69 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions C3 and D2] Synthetic film fibres of thermoplastic organic polymer material having a denier of 3000 or lower and containing between 6 and 75% by weight of the polymer of a non-polymeric solid filler in finely divided form are prepared by subjecting a longitudinally stretched film of polymer material and filler to a mechanical treatment to induce fibrillation of the stretched film, e.g. by passing the stretched film under tension over a rotating cylinder provided with pins on its surface, the cylinder rotating in the same direction as but faster than the stretched film. The stretched film may be obtained by subjecting (a) a web of polymer+filler to an embossing treatment at a temperature below the polymer crystalline melting point or (b) a sheet-like mass of the polymer+filler to an embossing treatment at a temperature above its crystalline melting point. The embossing may be carried out by passing the polymer web or sheet under pressure contact through the nip of contra rotating rollers or belts having non-yielding surfaces at least one of the rollers or belts being profiled. In examples, films of polypropylene, or ethylene/propylene copolymer, are so treated.
