Abstract

1327735 Wells &c TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 19 Feb 1972 7812/72 Heading E1F An underground formation is fractured by injecting a composition dispersed in an aqueous carrier and comprising sand, cement, finely divided silica, and hydrocarbon oil containing an oil wetting agent into the formation to form or maintain fractures and maintaining the pressure for a period sufficient to permit the composition to set and form a fluid permeable barrier in the fractures. The silica is a flour of 200-325 mesh (U.S. Sieve size) and the sand is 12-40 mesh (U.S. Sieve size). The composition is 0.01-0.30 parts silica, 4-8 parts sand, 0.4-0.8 hydrocarbon oil, 0.01-0.10 oil wetting agent and 1 part cement (all parts by weight). 1-10 pounds of composition are dispersed in 1 gallon of aqueous medium which contains 1-15% by weight of sodium chloride. In the formation the composition settles and is contacted by an aqueous solution of a water soluble surface active agent to water wet the composition. The formation may be initially fractured by a fluid containing a probing agent and the composition and medium is injected into the fractures formed by the fluid. The method is suitable for use in soft calcareous formations.
