Abstract

1327144 Emulsion polymerization CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 18 Jan 1971 [19 Jan 1970] 2335/71 Heandig C3P Aqueous dispersions of conjugated diolefin/ vinyl monomer/unsaturated acid copolymerscontaining 0À1-4À0% of free emulsifier based on total solids, are obtained by polymerization with an initial pH-value in the range 1À5-3À6 and a temperature not exceeding 100‹ C., 10-70% of the carboxyl groups being neutralized following the polymerization and the dispersion then being agglomerated. The products are of low viscosity and only faint odour. In examples dispersions are obtained from butadiene, styrene and either acrylic or fumaric acid, in the presence of potassium persulphate, a C 8-12 paraffin sulphonate, dodecyl mercaptan, and NH 3 or H 2 SO 4 to adjust the pH if necessary, followed by partial neutralization of carboxyl groups with aqueous ammonia, and agglomeration by means of oxidized polyethylene oxides.
