Abstract

1326651 Fluidized bed combustion apparatus operating under pressure COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 21 Jan 1972 [29 Jan 1971] 3458/71 Heading F1L [Also in Division F4] Fluidized bed combustion apparatus comprises a lower bed of particulate material 14 into which fuel and fluidizing combustion air are introduced, and an upper bed of particulate material into which the gaseous products of combustion pass, and the amount of heat transferred to heat exchange tubes 36 in the upper bed being regulated by adjusting the rate at which particulate material is passed from the upper part of the upper bed through a conduit 26 by a paddle distributor 22 to the lower bed 14. The distributor 22 has passage for the inlet of fuel. There may be more than two beds, and there may be provision for transferring heat exchange material between any two of them. The apparatus may be used in a combined gas turbine-steam cycle plant, the arrangements with three beds giving a low minimum operating load. In a modification, Fig. 9, two fluidized bed arrangements are placed side-by-side within a pressure tight casing 160. Each of the lower fluidized beds 126, 134 is supported on a corrugated distribution plate, a trough in one plate corresponding to a ridge in the other. A common duct 120 between the two beds allows material from the upper beds 128, 136 to pass to distributors 146 arranged in the troughs of each bed. Fuel is fed in through the shafts of the distributors, and heat exchange'tubes are arranged in each upper bed. The gases from each set of fluidized beds are passed through cyclone separators to a common gas outlet duct.
