Abstract

1326632 Slack adjusters KNORR-BREMSE GmbH 9 Sept 1970 [9 Sept 1969] 43254/70 Heading F2E A floating caliper spot-type disc brake has hydraulic and mechanical actuation the mechanical actuator being provided with automatic adjustment and comprising a spindle 10 having a screw threaded connection 12 with a sleeve 13, keyed at 14 for axial but non-rotatable movement, which abuts at 19 with a sleeve 17 having a screw threaded connection 18, of opposite hand with a caliper 4, sleeve 17 carrying ratchet teeth 20 which engage with a pawl 22 pivoted at 21 to an operating lever 9 rigidly connected to screw threaded spindle 10. When lever 9 is turned in the direction of arrow 23 spindle 10 is axially displaced by means of screw thread 12 so that a pressure pin 11 exerts pressure on a brake pad. If wear occurs in the pad the extra movement of lever 9 necessary to compensate for this causes pawl 22 to ride along the back of one tooth of toothing 20 and on to the back of another so that on release of lever 9 the sleeve 17 is turned in threaded connection 18 so that the abutment at 19 causes compensation of the wear. Pawl 22 may have a slot 24, Fig. 4 (not shown) in which a spring (27) loading a pressure member 26 is located so that only during the initial part of the release operation does pin 21 entrain pawl 22 but during the remaining part spring (27) causes member 26 to abut pin 21 at the side adjacent the tooth engaging surface (25) of the pawl 22 thereby initialling displacing pin 21 in slot (24). Thus at the beginning of the release pawl 22 retains its position relative to caliper 4 with the result that spindle 10 is screwed in the release direction while sleeve 17 is still stationary. In a further embodiment Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) The pawl (22<SP>1</SP>) is provided in a recess (28) of lever 9 which in section diverges towards the brake disc, the pawl (22<SP>1</SP>) carrying a bevelled member (36) engaging in a slot (35) of the ratchet provided on sleeve (17<SP>1</SP>). On operation of lever 9 the pawl (22<SP>1</SP>) pivots in the recess 28 and if wear is excessive, engages a wall 29 thereof causing bevel 36 to slide over the slot into another so that on release the lever sleeve (17<SP>1</SP>) moves axially to provide the adjustment.
