Abstract

1326466 Scan conversion; radar display ELLIOTT BROS (LONDON) Ltd 23 June 1972 [20 July 1971] 34019/71 Headings H4D and H4F A radar display is described using a technique for scan conversion of the radial sweep PPI radar signals to a raster display, similar to that disclosed in Specification 1,315,624, storage tubes used being of the type in which a stored signal is erased upon readout to an extent dependent upon the reading beam current, the current being therefore varied to control the persistence of the display. In the shown embodiment for displaying an original P.P.I. display in a raster scan (18), the radar video returns at 4 are alternately applied line by line to silicon storage vidicons 1, 2. The scanning outputs from P.P.I, time base 12 and raster time base 11 are alternately applied at line (12) rate via switches 10 and 14 so that the writing-in is with a P.P.I. radial scan for both vidicons and the reading-out is always with a raster scan. Each vidicon is switched from write to read format by the energization of a transistor 20 or 21 so that the potential on the target drops from 150V, i.e. the write format voltage, to between 8 and 20V. The latter or read format voltage determines the persistence of the final display and is varied by resistor 24. After one radial line has been written into vidicon 1, switches 3, 10, 14, 17 change over so that the line is read out by raster scan and the result fed to raster scanned display tube 18. The next radial line has mean-while been written into vidicon 2 for subsequent raster scan read-out. Fig. 2 gives a summary of the operation.
