Abstract

1325526 Treating I.C. engine charges: cooling SOC ANON DE VEHICULES INDUSTRIELS ET D'EQUIPEMENTS MECANIQUES SAVIEM 28 April 1971 [29 April 1970] 12007/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division F4] Turbo supercharged Diesel engine 1 has a main engine cooling system consisting of a conventional radiator 45 connected to the engine block by pipes 46 and 47, and an independent auxiliary cooling system for the combustion air and lubricating oil. The engine exhaust gas passes along a pipe 2 to a turbine 5 mechanically connected to an air compressor 6, which supplies combustion air to the engine through a pipe 8 which passes through a heat exchanger 9. Engine lubricating oil is passed through a heat exchanger 9 which is in series with the heat exchanger 8. Both heat exchangers are part of a circuit which includes a header tank 19, flow control valves 3 and 4 and a third heat exchanger 25. Air is drawn through the third heat exchanger by an injector operated by the exhaust gas leaving the turbine. The injector comprises an annular chamber 37 which the gas enters tangentially and is then guided radially inwardly until it emerges travelling parallel to the axis of the chamber into a tube 34. The gas is accelerated within the injector so that a suction is created which draws air through the heat exchanger 25. The flow control valve 3 includes a temperature sensitive element which opens the valve at 55-60‹ C. The flow control valve 4 contains a pressure sensitive element which is acted on by the output pressure of the compressor 6, to which it is connected by a line 27. When the engine is operating near maximum power the valve 4 is opened so that the circulation of fluid in the auxiliary circuit is as rapid as possible. During low power operation when the combustion air should be at a relatively high temperature the valve 4 is closed. In a construction for use with an air cooled engine, Fig. 5 (not shown) the injector draws air directly through the heat exchangers 9 and 16, and the valves 3 and 4 control a shutter in the wall of the air duct downstream of the heat exchangers but upstream of the injector, the opening of the shutter determining the amount of air passing through the heat exchangers.
