Abstract

1325090 Mixing apparatus P R STEHNING 30 March 1971 25627/71 Addition to 1304257 Heading B1C The apparatus of the Specification of the main patent is modified by the provision of openings 43 in the blades 21, whereby the material being treated is divided into partial flows under and over the arms 20 with vertical circulation, Fig. 5, the material supply being regulated to maintain a constant level 24. The size of the apertures may be adjustable for materials of different viscosity (see Fig. 2, not shown) or the blades or entire stirrer assembly may be exchangeable. The arm 20 may be of aeroplane wing section; it may have a sharp leading edge 63 and its rear edge may merge with the rear face of the blades 21 which may be curved downwardly in the trailing direction. The arms 20 may also carry curved guide vanes 64 of aeroplanewing cross-section and cooperating with the concentric walls 27. In one embodiment for liquids of viscosity below 5,000 poise (see Figs. 6-9, not shown) the blades 21 trail considerably and each has one small opening in the lower part. The angle of conicity of the vessel and stirrer is preferably an acute angle for liquids up to 300 poise, and an obtuse angle thereover; while the speed of rotation of the stirrer is preferably not more than 4 rev/min evaporation of for liquid up to 3,000 poise, for mixing, heating or cooling of liquids of 1,000-5,000 poise it may be 10 rev/min. The direction of flow through the apparatus may be reversed. The apparatus may be used for condensation of polyesters or polyamides, preparation of non-condensing and non-polymerizing synthetic resins, treatment of syrups, sugars, milk for production of powder, and foodstuffs generally, cellulose for paper, and mixing of pigments.
