1323970 Disc cutters FRED CAM (ENGS) Ltd 28 Dec 1971 60234/71 Heading B3W A device for shearing steel strip transversely comprises a cutting head 14 supporting disc cutters 20 and being formed with two slots 15 to receive the strip, means for driving the cutter head across the strip being synchronized with means for driving at least one of the cutters so that the peripheral speed of the or each cutter is substantially the same as the transverse speed of the head. The drive means for the cutting head comprises a fixed cylinder 9 and a ram supporting a pair of gear-wheels 12 which engage fixed racks 4 on the shear base and a rack 13 on the underside of the head. A power driven screw may replace the ram. Thelower cutter 20 is driven via reduction gearing by a pinion 22 engaging a rack 5 on a side wall 3 of the shear frame. Plates (18), Fig. 1 (not shown), at the mouth of each slot guide the severed portion and the strip stock into the slots 15. The cutting head is supported on a plate 7 which has edge flanges engaging flanges 8 on the side walls 3. Associated with each cutter disc is a shoe plate 29, Fig. 6, which has dogs 31 spring loaded to urge serrated faces 32 against the strip, the dogs of each cutter disc being opposed to the other cutter disc to draw the strip through the cutters. One cutter may be movable transversely relative to the other to provide for different thicknesses of strip to be sheared. A pneumatically actuated clamping bar (25), Fig. 1 (not shown) in front of the shear co-operates with a support roll (23).
