Abstract
1323282 Abrasive material NORTON CO 1 Feb 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 4625/72 Heading C4V Molten oxide abrasives are rapidly cooled by casting on to a packed mass of a plurality of discrete bodies of material of a different composition from that of the abrasive, which is non- reactive with the abrasive, and having an average size of from 2 inches to half an inch. Preferably the cooling bodies have a thermal conductivity higher than that of the abrasive material, for example at 1000‹ C. of at least 15 B.T.U./(hr.)(sq. foot)(‹F. per foot). Graphite and metals of melting point above 1000‹ C. are suitable. The bodies may be spheroidal and may be ferromagnetic. They may be packed to give a void volume as high as 37%. The ratio of cooling body volume to abrasive volume may be in the range 1 : 1 to 3 : 1. Penetration of the melt into the interstices may be aided by the use of a header extending into the mass of bodies and suction may be applied also to increase penetration.
