Abstract

1323264 Cutting yarns ELLISON TUFTING MACHINERY Ltd 23 March 1972 [23 March 1971 4 Jan 1972] 7626/71 and 259/72 Heading B4B [Also in Division Dl] A cutting device for cutting-off tufts 25 of yarn 17 from a supply creel comprises a feed means 21, 22 for feeding yarn through an entry passage 12 in a housing member 11, a rotatable cutting shaft. 14 having a passage 15 therein adapted to be aligned with the yarn entry passage and an air passage 13 in the housing member, the surface of the shaft co-operating with a mating surface in the housing so as to. shear the yarn upon rotation of the shaft, the cut-off tuft 25 being delivered through a duct 16 when the passage 12 is in alignment with the air passage 13. The feed means includes a tube 20 slidable in the passage 12 by means of a bar 21 which reciprocates in synchronism with the oscillation of the cutting shaft 14, a pawl 22 is pivotally mounted on the tube and is arranged to grip the yarn when the bar is moving towards the cutting shaft. A compressed-air actuated plunger 18, 181 is adapted to clamp the yarn when the tube 20, together with the pawl are moving away from the cutting shaft. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the cutting shaft 14 is oscillated through 90 degrees. A number of cutting devices may be arranged in line with the ducts 16 being connected by, e.g. flexible tubes, to the hollow needles of a tufting machine.
