Abstract

1323083 Surgical drainage and irrigating systems ELLIOT LABORATORIES Inc 3 July 1970 32372/70 Heading A5R A drainage tube for use in a system for draining and irrigating a body cavity comprises tubing 6 having a slit 72 extending around part of the circumference thereof, the unslit part of the circumference forming a hinge about which ends of the tubing at the slit can be swung away from each other so that the tip of a syringe 68 containing irrigating fluid can be inserted into the proximal portion of the tube. A sleeve 74 slides on the end 70 of tube 6 and normally holds the ends of the slit against swinging movement. The tube 6 is a urinary drainage tube and communicates with a bag 4 through a one-way valve assembly, the diameter of tube 6 being such as to prevent the build-up of a column of urine in tube 6. The valve assembly 66 comprises a housing having a valve seat and a ball which moves away from the seat in response to fluid flow from tube 6, the fluid flowing into bag 4 through slots in the housing. Back flow of fluid from bag 4 moves the ball into contact with the valve seat thereby closing tube 6. The bag 4 comprises panels of flexible plastics material heat sealed together and having a pocket 32 at the upper end within which is located a stabilising tube 42 which removably receives one end of a draw-off tube 10 for emptying the bag and sealed thereto at 60. The front panel of the bag is transparent or translucent and the rear panel opaque and their inner surfaces are roughened to prevent them sticking together. A cotton wool filter 50 is located in tube 42, and graduation marks to denote the amount of fluid are provided on the bag. To prevent contamination the end of draw-off tube 10 is protected by a cap (48, Fig. 16, not shown). Tube 10 and stabilising tube 42 provide an overflow should bag 4 become overfull and also an entry for sterilizing gas. The syringe 68 comprises a flexible plastics bottle filled with sterile irrigation fluid and having a tapered neck 90, the fluid being ejected by squeezing the bottle. A tamper-proof cap is provided. Alternatively irrigating fluid may be fed from a sterile bottle by tubing.
