Abstract
1322871 Weighing electrically METTLER INSTRUMENTE A G 7 Jan 1972 [23 June 1971 29 Sept 1971] 820/72 Headings G1N and G1W] To obtain a linear relationship between weight and the natural resonant frequency of a vibrating string subjected to the weight, an auxiliary, non- linear force is algebraically added to the weight. As shown Fig.1, a pan assembly 15, 16 supported by two spring links 13, 14 from a fixed pillar 12, is attached by a spring 20 to a string 19 suspended from an arm 18 of the pillar 12. The string 19 is made to vibrate transversely at its natural resonant frequency by unit 23, which frequency is indicative of the weight in the scale pan 16. The pan carrier 15 also carries a permanent magnet 26 co-operating with a fixed magnet 27 to produce an additional non-linear force on the string 19, which can be adjusted by a screw 30 to linearise the relationship between vibration frequency and weight. Hunting is reduced by an eddy current brake 32, 33. In modifications the auxiliary non- linear force is provided by a non-linear spring, or a variable length lever arm for the movable part, separately or in combination. In a further embodiment Fig. 12, the non assembly 15, 16 is attached to two strings 19, 19' whose tensions and vibration frequencies vary in opposite directions with applied weight, and the frequency difference is determined, linearization being provided by magnets 46, 47 and 48.
