Abstract
1322807 Chimneys NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 29 Nov 1971 [30 Nov 1970 31 March 1971] 56710/70 and 8282/71 Heading F4J [Also in Division F2] To dampen vibrations of a structure fixed to a support secured to or provided by the ground or the seabed, e.g. transverse vibrations of a mast, smoke stack, tall building 10 or oil industry conductor-tube, it is provided with at least one tank 14 containing a mass of liquid 16 free to oscillate across the tank(s) with a natural frequency similar to that of (or of a principal mode of) the structure, the dimensions and shape of the tank(s) and the liquid depth are such that the liquid motion under resonance conditions will lag 90 degrees behind that of the structure and the forces exerted by the liquid will be in anti-phase to corresponding frequency components in the forces exciting the structure. The liquid 16 may be water for an air-conditioning system, a calcium chloride solution or oil. The natural frequency of the structure in the direction of liquid oscillation may be twice the tank dimension in that direction divided by #gh where h is the liquid depth. The tank or tanks may be at an antinode of the structure's oscillation and symmetrical about a vertical axis of symmetry of the structure. The ratio of natural damping to that necessary to prevent oscillation, for the structure, may be less than 0À05. Two or more of the damping systems may be used and may be dissimilar. They may all be tuned to the natural frequency of the structure or one or more may be so tuned and the remainder to higher modes. Inclined baffles (18) of perforated plate or woven nylon or stainless steel are mounted in the tank 14 on the walls to overhang the liquid 16 for curbing splash and noise. The tank may be of circular section and mounted around a rigidlybased chimney stack to provide an annular liquid space possibly containing submerged weirs (40). There may be coaxial annular tanks (one tuned to a frequency mode other than the natural frequency) or a symmetrical arrangement of circular tanks around the stack.
