Abstract

1322341 Valves for casting ladles and tundishes USS ENGINEERS & CONSULTANTS Inc 26 May 1970 [26 May 1969] 25266/70 Heading F4B [Also in Division F2] A slide valve for a bottom pouring ladel or tundish comprises a slide 55 supported on rails 25, 26 extending from opposite sides of a mounting plate 17 attached to the ladle &c. and supporting a fixed orifice plate 19 against which the slide is pressed by springs in housings 27 acting on levers 28. The mounting plate 17 is attached by screws 18 to a sub-mounting plate 15 which is itself attached to the vessel by screws 16 and encloses the bottom of the pouring nozzle 14. Plate 15 also has an extension 46 carrying a fluid motor 47 which has a ram 50 pushing slides 55 or blank slides 56 below the nozzle 14. Extension 46 also carries parallel plates 53 with angle irons 54 forming a feed path for the slides 55, 56. The mounting plate 17 has passages 34, Fig. 4, connected to an air line and connected by branches 35 with the spring housings 27 for coding purposes. Orifice plate 19 rests on shoulders around an opening 23 in the mounting plate and is made of refractory with a disposable metal surround. In a modification (Fig. 6) the spring housings are replaced by hydraulic cylinders whose pistons press on levers 28. These levers and the rails 25, 26 are protected by heat shields 33.
