Abstract

1321839 Seaming; laminates STAFLEX INTERNATIONAL Ltd 24 July 1970 [7 Aug 1969] 39593/69 Headings B5K and B5N [Also in Division D1] A layer of fibres embedded in separate particles of adhesive, suitable for laminating layers of fabric, is formed by placing separate deposits of adhesive on a P.T.F.E. or silicone coated paper or endless belt, followed by a carded or air-laid web weighing no more than ¢ oz. per square yard. The resin may be any thermoplastic polymer or polymer mixture with a softening point between 100‹ and 180‹ C., e.g. polyethylene, polyamide, cellulose acetate, or a plasticized polyvinyl chloride polymer with, e.g. vinyl acetate. It is deposited by sprinkling resin particles, by printing a plastisol in a regular pattern, or as droplets of a solution or an aqueous emulsion. The separate deposits of resin may be heated to fuse the resin or remove the water or the solvent. The web is added, and lightly pressed by a cooled roll or by a downward air stream. The web containing spaced regions of adhesive is removed from the belt and placed between 2 layers of a worsted fabric, to produce a laminate by the action of heat and pressure. The web may also be used as a bonding layer for holding down a turned-over hem or seam. Preferably the resin should contribute ¢-1¢ oz./ sq. yd. to the weight of the web. It may therefore be best to remove the backing paper layer only after the web has been applied to the surface of one cloth.
