Abstract

1321473 Laminates FORMICA INTERNATIONAL Ltd 7 Oot 1971 [14 Oct 1970] 48731/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A wear resistant decorative plastics laminate comprises a consolidated cured structure obtained by the application of heat and pressure to a superimposed assembly comprising, in order (1) a core of thermosetting resin-impregnated fibrous sheets, e.g. paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resin, (2) a coloured or printed decorative fibrous sheet, e.g. paper impregnated with a thermosetting resin, (3) a wear resistant layer comprising a thermosetting resin composition, finely divided water-insoluble mineral matter having a particle size not larger than 100 microns and having a hardness of at least 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness and a finely divided fibrous cellulosic material having a particle size not larger than 100 microns and (4) a thermosetting resin-impregnated alphacellulose paper overlay sheet. The thermosetting resin used to impregnate the decorative paper sheet and the overlay and to form the wear-resistant layer may be the same or different and may be a melamine-formaldehyde, melamine urea-formaldehyde, unsaturated polyester or aminotriazine modified alkyd resin. The finely divided mineral material used in the wear resistant layer may be used in admixture with a mineral material having a Mohs hardness of less than 7, suitable materials being quartz, corundum, fused aluminium oxide and carborundum or fused alumina and quartz, pyrophyllite or calcium silicate. The wear resistant layer may comprise 6-26 parts of mineral matter and 10-40 parts of cellulosic material per 100 parts by weight of resin. The wear resistant layer composition which may also contain dyes, pigments and a penetrating control additive, e.g. sodium alginate, may be provided as a coating on the impregnated decorative sheet and/or overlay sheet prior to assembly of the layers. Heat and pressure may be applied in a press having highly polished press plates optionally with the use of release sheets or agents. The gloss surface of the laminate may be reduced by a mechanical abrading process.
