Brush-making machines.-Relates to improvements in the tuft-making machine described in Specification 25053/13 and consists principally in arranging the bristle magazine horizontal so that the bristles are fed to the clamping-means in a vertical position, and in so shaping the magazine that the bristle supply is automatically maintained. The magazine, shown in side view in Fig. 3 and in plan in Fig. 2, comprises a cradle 40 in which fits an open trough 47 having an upwardly curved bottom on which the bristles are stacked end-on and fed forwards by the presser-plate 52. The cradle is adapted to be moved backwards and forwards along guides 41 on the machine table during each complete operation of the machine. When the magazine is in the forward position, the bristle material is supported by a pair of bridge-pieces 55, 56, Figs. 2 and 18, provided with combs which project into the material and hold it firmly while the parting needle 75 is moved laterally through the gate 79 to separate off the requisite layer of bristles. The clamp C is carried along with the needle into the magazine and after engaging the divided layer is moved to the buncher, turning at the same time from the vertical to the horizontal position so that the bristles are in the correct position for being acted upon. The ends of the divided layer of bristles are treated with pitch or like binding medium before being withdrawn from the magazine. The frame carrying the bunching jaws is adapted to slide in the guides 150, Fig. 2, so that as the clamp C brings a layer of bristles from the magazine, the bunching jaws are positioned so as to close upon such layer. The bunches or tufts are ejected from the jaws by ejector pins as the frame moves backwards.
