Abstract

1321133 Magnetic heads INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 28 May 1971 [30 June 1970] 17807/71 Heading G5R A magnetic head comprises an elongated first layer 11 of magnetic material, a second layer 12 of magnetic material magnetically joined at 38 to one end 34 of the first layer and overlapping the other end 23 of the first layer to form a non-magnetic gap 14 therebetween, and electrical windings 30, 42 and 31, 43 extending around the first magnetic layer 11. As shown, the non-magnetic gap 14 is provided by a layer 17 of electrically conductive material to which the windings are connected so that return current is conducted through the legs 21, 22 of the core formed by the magnetic layers 11, 12 to a terminal 37, the other terminal being provided by a conductive layer 29. The head is built up by successive depositions, maskings and etchings of layers of permalloy, insulator and conductor (e.g. copper), using photolithographic, vacuum and thin film techniques.
