Abstract

1320466 Chemical hardening CARL-ZEISSSTIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 19 April 1971 [11 Feb 1970] 21459/71 Heading C1M A process for the production of a glass article comprises melting a glass forming batch consisting essentially in percentage by weight of SiO 2 48-62; B 2 O 3 0-1; P 2 O 5 0-5À0; Al 2 O 3 13À0-20À0; ZrO 2 0-4À4; ZnO 0-2À5; PbO 0-3À1; Na 2 O 10À0-20À0; K 2 O 0À5; Li 2 O 0À5; CuO 0-1À0; V 2 O 5 0-4À0; Fe 2 O 3 1À5-8À5; NiO 0-4À3; CoO 0-1, up to 10% other compatible oxides and optionally a reducing agent such as carbon or elemental silicon, drawing sheet glass from the melt and subjecting the drawn sheet or a shaped article formed therefrom to chemical hardening by ion-exchange operation, the ion exchange operation is carried out at a temperature below the transformation temperature of the resultant glass by exchange of lithium ions in the glass with sodium ions, e.g. by using a sodium nitrate metl. Preferably the temperature is at least 115‹ C. below the transformation temperature.
