Abstract
1320332 Welding by fusion JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 2 Nov 1970 [18 Nov 1969] 56277/69 Heading B3R In electron beam welding of high carbon or carburized steel, out of or, as shown, in vacuum, the welding region of the workpiece is induction pre-heated. As shown, a ring and a shaft on which it is to be circumferentially welded by a beam from an electron gun 22 are mounted in a welding vacuum chamber 12 and pre-heated by a water-cooled, copper tubing, induction coil 13 surrounding the shaft. The coil may be connected directly to an A.C. generator mounted outside the chamber or, as shown, it may be mounted on an auto-transformer 17 connected to the generator by current-lead-defining watercooled copper tubing 14. An aperture 12a of the chamber admits passage therethrough of said tubing 14 and also of cooling water supply insulating tubing 18 extending to the coil 13. The aperture 12a is closed by a plate 16 which is sealed to the chamber and to the tubing 14, 18 by 0-rings 19, 21.
