1319237 Seaming non - metallic sheet material BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 10 Sept 1970 [11 Sept 1969] 44907/69 Heading B5K Also in Division B6 A form member 16<SP>1</SP> for use in joining two portions of sheet material, at least one portion being of, or having a surface layer of, thermoplastic material, comprises a work engaging surface provided by two curved surface portions 24<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>1</SP> which are inclined to one another and form therebetween a curved ridge, but which are separated from one another by a groove 25<SP>1</SP> extending along the ridge. Preferably, the portions 24<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>1</SP> are parti-cylindrical. The groove 25<SP>1</SP> may be of rectangular cross-section and its walls may be plain to form a plain ribbed seam or provided with lines or serrations to form a decorative rib. Alternatively, a plain or a serrated wire 27 may be inserted in the groove 25<SP>1</SP> and secured to the end faces of the form by an epoxy resin adhesive. The aluminium form 16<SP>1</SP> may constitute the lower electrode in a high frequency welding machine for forming the back seam between two quarter portions of shoe upper parts. The quarter portions may comprise fabric coated with polyvinyl chloride and they are located on the form with the polyvinyl chloride coated surfaces in contact with the portions 24<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>1</SP> so that upon application of heat and pressure the polyvinyl chloride tends to flow to fill the groove. Alternatively, the quarter portions may be made of a thermoplastic poromeric material. In addition to serving as an electrode, the form 16<SP>1</SP> may be heated by elements inserted into bores therein. The form 16<SP>1</SP> may replace the form (16) in the machine described in Specification 1,281, 875.
