Abstract

1318908 Programmed control of machine tools; automatic control of linear speed GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 28 Oct 1970 [12 Dec 1969] 51307/70 Headings G3N and G3R [Also in Divisions B3 and G4] A control system for a machine tool, controls the speed of rotation of the workpiece so that the linear speed at the cutting tool is constant. A tape reader 44 feeds data to arithmetic unit 42 which has a delay line store 36. The tool drive is controlled by digital signals from the arithmetic unit to servo drive controls 46 and 48 which control motors 30 and 34. The speed of rotation of the workpiece is measured by encoder 68 and fed to speed control 49 which controls the speed of rotation of motor 20 via servo drive 50. In the speed control unit Fig.3 a digital signal representing the required surface speed is fed into multiplier 60 together with a clock frequency from clock 41, via frequency divider 66, to produce a pulse output, whose frequency represents the speed. This signal is multiplied by 1/2# in multiplier 62 and fed to variable phase counter 78. The actual speed of the workpiece is encoded by encoder 68 and fed to multiplier 64 together with a digital signal R representing the current radius of the workpiece, derived from the arithmetic unit. The output of multiplier, 64 thus represents the linear surface speed of the workpiece multiplied by 1/2#, and is fed to variable phase counter 80. The phase of the two counters are compared by a comparator 82, and a difference signal is derived representing the difference between the actual and desired surface speed of the workpiece. This difference is fed to digital to analogue converter 84 and then to the servo drive 50 for the workpiece motor 20. In a second embodiment the workpiece speed is not measured directly, but simulated from the speed control signals supplied to the variable phase counters 78 and 80.
