Abstract

1318882 Mechanical switches; retractive switches JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 3 June 1970 [25 June 1969] 32045/69 Heading H1N A switch includes an operating lever 15 which is movable angularly (as seen in Fig. 1) to rotate a rotor 14 to operate two pairs of contacts 18, 19 and which is pivoted on rotor 14 (by pivot 16) and pivotable vertically (as seen in Fig. 2) to move slider 31 to operate two pairs of contacts 41, 42, Fig. 6 (not shown), the switch base 11 having a detent projection 39 engaging in recesses 36, 37 in slider 31 to locate slider 31. Rotor 14 is located in one of three positions by a ball 23, Fig. 3 (not shown), spring-pressed into one of three notches 24, Fig. 3, in base 11. The switch is intended to be mounted on the steering column of a motor vehicle and striker arms 17 return rotor 14 to the central position shown in Fig. 1. Also in rotor 14 is a ball 27, Fig. 3, spring- pressed into recess 28, Fig. 3, the ends of which are engaged by the ball before the two outer positions of the lever 15 and rotor 14 are reached to give a "feel" that the outer positions are being reached. Lever 15 may be released when the outer positions are "felt" but before the outer notches 24 are engaged, in which case lever 15 and rotor 14 retract to the central position. Similarly slider 31 when projection 39 is engaging recess 36 may be moved further to an unstable position to operate another set of contacts, from which position it retracts when released. Lever 15 is hollow and may have a set of contacts including a bridging contact at its outer end or lever 15 may be pushed inwardly to operate contacts. Further switches may be mounted on cover-plate 29 of the switch or on base 11.
