Abstract

1318881 Oxo process BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 27 April 1970 [9 May 1969] 23678/69 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Alcohols and/or aldehydes are prepared by the hydroformylation of C 2-20 olefins with CO and H 2 at 20-250‹ C. and 0-4000 p.s.i.g. in the presence of a solid catalyst comprising a polymer containing cobalt or rhodium bound to phosphorus atoms. Examples prepare heptaldehydes from hexene-1. Ethylene, propylene and heptenes are also specified as starting materials. Suitable polymers which are subsequently reacted with Co or Rh compounds to form the catalyst include: reaction products of a metal phosphide with a halogen-containing polymer; polymers and copolymers of ethylenically unsaturated compounds containing trivalent phosphorus; reaction products of organic halophosphines with metallated polymers; and reaction products of hydroxyl-containing polymers with compounds containing phosphorus and halogen or a group -OR. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,254,182.
