Abstract

1318450 Pill dispenser M D THOMAS 3 Sept 1970 [1/C U.S. 5 Sept 1969, 17 Nov 1969] 42186/70 Headings B8C and B8P A dispenser device for pills comprises a hollow member 12, which has a bore 12 with an enlarged closed inner end portion 28 provided with an exit opening 14 and an enlarged open upper portion 30, and which is preferably formed of two hinged half-portions 18, 20 releasably fastened together at 24, a disposable cylindrical pill magazine 34 which has releasable retaining means 42, 44 at its lower end and which is adapted to fit into the bore 26, and a pushbutton 52 which is slidably accommodated in the enlarged portion 30. Legs 56, 58 on the push-button 52, guided in slots in the member 12, are connected, at their lower ends, by a pill support 60 which is slidably accommodated in the enlarged portion 28. A plunger 46 fits into the open top of the magazine 32 and has spring- like pawl arms 74, 76 which co-operate respectively with ratchet teeth 56, 72 formed respectively on the leg 56 and on the hollow member 12 adjacent the bore 26. The push-button 52 is normally biased by a spring 62 to its uppermost position in which the pill support 60 blocks the pill exit 14. A magazine 32 locating-projeotion 48 fits into a recess 50 which extends laterally from the enlarged portion 30. The releasable retaining means for the pills in the magazine comprises four resilient arms 40 each having at its free lower end, an inwardly directed detent 44. On depressing the button 54 the pill support 60 is lowered to open the exit 14, and the pawl and ratchet connection 56, 74 between the leg 56 and the plunger 46 carries the latter downwardly so that the lowermost pill descends to the level of the exit 14 for subsequent withdrawal, the pawl and ratchet connection 76, 72 holding the plunger 46 at its new level while the spring 62 returns the actuator 52 to its raised position. A transparent indicia strip 82 is secured over a slot 84 formed in the container body 12. A modification, which does not include a disposable magazine, includes a hollow member (112) with a central bore (120) which has an exit opening (124) adjacent its lower end and a slot (130) at one side which slidingly receives the single leg (132) of an actuator (114) the leg (132) carrying a pill support (134) which normally blocks the exit (124). The plunger (116) has diametrically opposed pawl arms (160, 162) which co-operate respectively with ratchet teeth on the leg (132) and adjacent the bore (120). Both embodiments can be used with indicia of periodicity.
