Abstract
1317893 Welding by fusion UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 21 Aug 1970 [3 Sept 1969] 43718/69 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions G3 and H2] In the welding of Mg or Al alloys using a tungsten electrode and inert gas shielding a thyristor controlled power supply 1-4 controls the welding current according to a programme illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown) and determined by function generator 12 whose output is connected to firing circuit 11 providing pulses X, Y of controlled firing angle to thyristors 2, 3. A feedback signal from resistor 9 via leads A, B to comparator 14 ensures that the desired welding current profile is maintained. Only the half cycle when the electrode 7 is negative to the workpiece 8 need be controlled, or the respective half waves when the electrode is negative or positive may have independent control programmes, separate firing circuits being provided. As shown both half waves have the same control programme, the waveform being displayed in Fig. 2 (not shown). A bleed resistor 10 is provided, as are a D.C. correction unit 5, and an arc stabilizer and starter 6. The portion (E-F, Fig. 2) of the current profile, for "tail off" or "crater filling" may be linear as shown, or parabolic, or involute. Protection diodes 4 are provided, as is a power supply 13 for the control circuitry.
