Abstract

1317836 Agitating liquids ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 12 March 1971 6731/71 Heading B1C [Also in Division C6] The microbiological production of protein utilising an aerobic, hydrocarbon-assimilating, protein accumulating micro-organism e.g. Candida intermedia, is carried out in an elongated, water jacketted horizontal reactor 10, Fig. 1, provided with apertured rotating discs 48 which serve to carry circular layers of liquid into the air above. The discs along the shaft towards the outlet (left) end have a decreasing number of increasingly larger apertures. A reactor whose cylindrical part is 5 feet in length may have 60 discs. The level of liquid may be regulated by an adjustable side arm 74, Air is flowed through the reactant from a pump 54 and effluent gases are vented through throttle valve 66. Such flow can be used for controlling the temperature of the fermentation.
