Abstract
1317524 Magnetic materials GENERAL MOTORS CORP 24 June 1971 [2 July 1970] 29594/71 Heading N1H A hexagonal ferrite MO. 6Fe 2 O 3 (M = Ba, Sr or Pb) is made by milling a homogeneous mixture of magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ), a source of BaO, SrO or PbO and 0À3-1À5 wt per cent boric acid or boric oxide, and calcining the resultant mixture. A permanent magnet is made by comminuting the calcined mixture, e.g., to 1-2 microns, orienting the particles and forming them into a body of required shape, and sintering the body at 1900-2150‹ F (1038-1177‹ C). The magnetite used may contain 93À02% Fe 3 O 4 , 6À15% Fe 2 O 3 , 0À1% Si, 0À06% V and less than 0À002% Ti and may have an initial particle size of 50 microns. Orientation may be effected magnetically by pressing an aqueous slurry of commincited particles in a directional magnetic field, or mechanically by dispersing the particles in a binder and forming a flexible sheet from which magnetic bodies are cut. In an example, test cylinders of density 2À75 g/cm<SP>3</SP> are pressed from an aqueous slurry of ferrite particles made from magnetite, strontium carbonate and H 3 BO 3 .
