Abstract

1317394 Two-part couplings PLESSEY CO Ltd 24 Feb 1972 [12 March 1971] 6792/71 Heading H2E An edge connector comprizes a body 1 having flanges 7, 8, 10, 11 and a web 6 with windows 13, and a carrier 2 with seatings 14 for retaining contact springs 3; the carrier being received between the flanges 10, 11 and the springs extending through the windows into the channel 9 formed between the flanges 7, 8 for receiving the edge of a circuit board. Each seating 14 has the form of a cavity, which may be of circular or hexagonal cross-section, with two opposed channels extending therefrom to accommodate a boss 16, a terminal portion 17 and stabilizing portion 18 of the spring, the corner 2 being located in the body by guides 15 engaging the seatings and secured by a snap-fit, clamps, adhesive or welding. The springs are formed with a bowed contact area 23 and end lugs 22, the latter sliding within widenings 33 which extend from the windows into the flanges 7, 8 where they are defined by limiting surfaces 34. When a circuit board is inserted between opposed springs, the bowed areas are distended and the lugs 22 slide from the widenings 33 over a step 31. A mounting bracket (Fig. 6, not shown) comprises a base (40) with an aperture (42) for receiving a screw and a boss (43) which slides within the channel 9, protruding edge surfaces (50) of the boss engaging surfaces 30 of the widenings 33 and lugs (46) snap-engaging the web 6. A coding stop (Fig. 7, not shown) comprises a plate (51) which may be inserted between grooved 38 faces 37 of the flanges 7, 8, so that with a stop inserted at a chosen position a circuit board requires a notch in a corresponding position before it can be inserted into the connector. The body and carrier are made in strip form and cut to a required length. (For Figure see next page)
