Abstract

1316573 Measuring volumes of liquids R J FULLWOOD & BLAND Ltd 15 May 1970 [17 Feb 1969] 8372/69 Heading B8N A device for measuring a volume of liquid, e.g. milk, comprises a measuring chamber 1 to which liquid is supplied from a storage tank 8 via a one-way valve 7 and from which liquid is discharged via an outlet pipe 3. The storage tank receives the liquid for example from a set of teat cups via supply pipe 9. The outlet pipe and interior of the storage tank are permanently connected to a vacuum source and the interior of the chamber 1 is alternately connected to the vacuum pipe and to atmosphere to effect liquid supply and discharge respectively. Float operated reed switches RD1, RD2 are connected in a circuit with solenoid S, a relay RL and a counter C for counting the number of times the solenoid is operated, the switch RD1 being normally closed and switch RD2 being normally open. In the position illustrated in Fig. 1 the switches are open, the solenoid is de-energized, and the measuring chamber is open to atmosphere. Liquid discharge takes place whilst supply of liquid into the chamber is prevented by pressure difference across valve 7. When the liquid level and thus float 20 falls switch RD1 will return to its normally closed condition, and subsequently switch RD2 will close thus completing a circuit including the relay RL which is thus energized. Closing of relay contacts RLA1 RLA2 effects establishment of a holding circuit and energization of the solenoid and the counter. Valve member 16 moves to its other limit position to connect the chamber with vacuum pipe 10. The pressure difference across the valve 7 is now such as to permit flow of liquid from the tank into the chamber. When float 20 actuates and opens switch RD 1 the circuit including the relay RL will be broken and the solenoid will be de-energized. The valve member 16 will return to the position illustrated to recommence the cycle. The device when incorporated in a vacuum milking system may be used in combination with a feed-dispensing apparatus arranged to dispense a quantity of feed dependent upon the number of times the solenoid is operated.
