Abstract

1316533 Ribbon mechanisms INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1971] 58826/71 Heading B6F Error correction.-An adhesive erasing ribbon is used to lift an erroneous character from the paper in a typewriter. Ribbon tensioning.-A spring 93 acting against a cam 85 in the form of a multi-toothed ratchet 86, positively maintains a continuous force 90 in a direction opposing the direction of rotation 91 of the supply roll (21, Fig. 2), thereby maintaining a continuous tension on the ribbon. The tension maintaining mechanism and the ribbon supply roll are mounted on a platform 70 pivotally supported on the carriage frame (17, Fig. 2) by a stud 71, so that movement of the ribbon lift mechanism (60) is accompanied by tilting of the supply roll. The system includes a mechanism for selecting either of two spring rates for tensioning the ribbon to a lower tension if it is of the cover-up type and not the adhesive type. The ribbons are wound on different spools (Figs. 6 and 7) that provide for the automatic selection. Extensions (28) of splices (26) on the adhesive type spool engage in windows 88 on the multi-toothed ratchet 86 thereby trapping a control arm 101 against a stop 99. The spool without extensions (28) does not trap control arm 101, so that rotation of the supply-roll causes spring 93 to pivot counter clockwise about post 94. This pivoted movement is accommodated by stretching of light-spring 98 instead of flexing of the stiff spring wire 93. Take-up mechanism.-The ribbon is wound on a desposable spool (22, Fig. 2) driven by a toothed wheel (31) which engages the periphery under spring bias. The wheel is driven by a reciprocating pawl (38) engaging windows in the face of the wheel (Fig. 3). Specification 1,315,632 and 1,316,534 are referred to.
