Abstract

1316371 Process for purification of gypsum GIULINI GmbH Gebr. 8 Oct 1970 [8 Oct 1969] 47925/70 Heading C1A Impure gypsum containing inorganic or organic, water-soluble or water-insoluble impurities is purified by subjecting an aqueous suspension of the gypsum to hydro separation at a pH of not more than 2À5 in the presence of a water-miscible or water-immiscible organic reagent. The hydro separation is preferably effected at a temperature of 5‹ to 60‹ C. at a gypsum slurry concentration of from 50 to 650 g. of dry gypsum per litre of suspension. The hydro separation process may be carried out using water passing either in the same direction or counter to the flow of the aqueous gypsum suspension. Examples of suitable hydro separators are upcurrent bowl classifiers, decanting centrifuges, flotation devices, concentrators, zig-zag and countercurrent washers. Suitable water-miscible organic reagents include oxygen containing compounds such as watersoluble aromatic, aliphatic or cyclic mono- or polyhydric C 1 -C 6 alcohols, water-soluble polyalcohols, sulphonates or sulphates, ketones, ethers, nitro compounds and methylated polyalcohols, e.g. methyl celluloses. Examples of the water-immiscible organic reagents are oxygen-containing water-immiscible-compounds such as aliphatic, aromatic and cyclic mono- or polyhydric C 4 -C 20 alcohols and aliphatic, aromatic or cyclic C 6 -C 20 hydrocarbons. The pH of the aqueous gypsum suspension is adjusted by the addition to it of from 0À2 to 20 kg. of strong acid (based on 100% acid) per 1 m<SP>3</SP> of suspension. The pH is preferably adjusted by adding sulphuric acid, but other acids such as nitric or monochloroacetic acid may be used. The process is carried out in one or more sequentially connected or parallel connected stages.
