1316263 Coating DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 1 July 1970 [4 July 1969] 33817/69 Heading B2E A polymeric material is coated on a substrate by contacting the substrate with particles of the polymeric material in the presence of compounds which are capable of reacting to form an aldehyde condensation resin. The plastics material may be polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylene / vinylacetate copolymer, ethylene / ethyl acrylate copolymer, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyphenylene oxide, polyamide, cellulosics, chlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated polyvinylchloride, ethylene/ propylene copolymer, polyurethanes and ionomers such as ethylene/sodium methacrylate copolymers. It may also be a block copolymer such as elastomeric block copolymer of formula A-(B-A) n in which A represents a non-elastomeric block having a second-order transition temperature not greater than 25‹C. and a number average molecular weight of 200-200,000, B an elastomeric polymer block having a glass-transition temperature of less than 10‹C and a number average molecular weight of 25,000-1,000,000 and n is an integer 1-10. The plastics material may be blended with an elastomer and a suitable blend is of polyvinyl chloride and nitrile rubber. The aldehyde condensated resin-forming material may include a methylene donating compound and an aromatic hydroxy compound or phenolic resin capable of reacting with further methylene groups such as a novolac resin. Numerous suitable methylene donating compounds such as hexamethoxyethylmelamine and cetyloxymethyl pyridinium chloride are listed. An aromatic hydroxy compound may be used to form the condensation resin such as resorcinol and 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane. A plasticizer such as a dialkylphthalate and a stabilizer such as tin dibutyl laurate may be present as well as fillers and pigments. The substrate may be a metal such as steel which may be oily, greasy or primed, glass or a textile material. The substrate may be heated prior to application of the coating material which may be applied by immersing the substrate into a fluidized bed of the polymeric material. Alternatively, the polymeric particle may be sprayed on to the substrate or applied using an electrostatic technique or a rotational moulding technique.
