Abstract

1316166 Typewriters INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 Dec 1970 [31 Dec 1969] 59906/70 Heading B6F A typewriter having a support post 122 for a printing head 118 includes a rotary table 66 having a plurality of loading means 100 thereon whereby the printing head can be loaded on to or unloaded from the post 122. When the printing head is required to be exchanged for one bearing a different type face, the print head carriage is returned to beginning of line position under keyboard or magnetic record control, line spacing being inhibited. The head is also automatically tilted to vertical position, and a cycle of operation is initiated whereby an arm 36 is depressed, urging a tube 102 downwardly to insert a blade 110 into a slot 120 in the head 118. This releases a retaining spring 117 from a groove 124 on the post 122. The arm 36 rises again, the head being retained on the tube 102 by the spring 117 frictionally engaging the blade 110. The table 66 rotates to selected position, and the arm 36 is again depressed to position on alternative head 118 on the post 122, the head being held down by a probe 116 under control of ratchet means 38 while the arm 36 rises once more to leave the head in position on the post 122. Impression density control means are automatically operated to compensate for the new type face.
