Abstract
1315170 Laminated heating elements KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 18 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 54796/70 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions D2 and H5] A flexible planar heating element comprises a carbon fibre loaded paper with a binder, an insulating coating and appropriate terminals for the supply of current. Carbon fibres of less than 30 microns diameter, e.g. 8-15 microns, are cut into fibrils of 3-10 mm. length, suspended in an organic solvent or water, and made into a paper. A binder in the ratio of 0À5 to 30% by weight to the total quantity of carbon fibrils is added by spraying on to the paper or by including it in the mixture prior to papermaking. A laminated product is disclosed in Example 3, in which polyvinyl alcohol fibres are incorporated into the paper-making mixture to serve as a binder, and the bonded paper is then sandwiched between polyvinylidene fluoride films which serve as the insulating material. Lists of other suitable binders and impregnants are given; the impregnant may be applied as a coating. The heating elements are used for warming rooms, preventing freezing of liquidsupply pipe-lines, de-icing railways, aircraft jetengine inlets and wings, melting snow or maintaining warm or warming dinnerware and kitchenware.
