Abstract

1314211 Sanitary pads WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 14 May 1971 [17 June 1970] 29456/70 Heading A5R [Also in Division D2] Non woven fibrous material is obtained by (i) producing a foamed aqueous suspension of fibres e.g. wood rayon and cellulose acetate fibres (ii) adding to the fibre stock beads of a carboxyl-group containing synthetic polymer (iii) swelling and softening the beads in the stock by treatment of the stock with alkali e.g. NaOH and (iv) producing a sheet from the stock by a wet laying process. In modifications of this process (a) the alkali (step iii) may be added to the stock prior to the beads, and (b) the polymer beads may be added to the stock on the wire of a paper-making machine. Specified polymers are (1) a copolymer of styrene, methyl methacrylate, and acrylic acid (2) a copolymer of butyl acrylate, styrene, methyl methacrylate and acrylic and (3) polymers prepared from such monomers as vinyl esters, crotonic acid, and methacrylic acid. The above material may be used to form a sanitary towel or baby's napkin comprising a padding mass of dispersible liquid absorbent material sandwiched between a layer of the above material and a layer of alkali dispersible liquid impermeable paper-like material.
