1314188 Tobacco-smoke filters R J REYNOLDS TOBACCO CO 30 June 1970 [30 June 1969 (2) 15 Aug 1969 13 Nov 1969 9 Feb 1970 31 March 1970] 31740/70 Heading A2C A smoke filter device comprises an elongated filter body in the form of a smoke impervious plug 20 having a generally cylindrical configuration, with an upstream end wall 22 a downstream end wall 24, and a generally cylindrical side wall 30, an elongated outer sleeve 16 of smoke impervious material surrounding the plug 20, and smoke passage means for directing the flow of smoke through the device, the plug 20 having aperture means 32 (Figs. 6, 7) or recess means (Figs. 8 to 16 not shown) formed in a portion of the wall 30, and a separate thin membrane 18 of smoke impervious material overlying that portion of the side wall 30 containing the aperture means 32 or recess means, and defining therebetween a portion of the smoke passage means, the membrane 18 having a plurality of small smoke acceleration orifices 36 in that portion of the membrane 18 overlying the aperture means 32 or recess means, the sleeve 16 surrounding the membrane 18 and being spaced therefrom to define therebetween another portion of the smoke passage means, whereby substantially all of the smoke that passes through the smoke passage means through the orifices 36. The Fig. 14 embodiment is identical with the Fig. 1 embodiment of Specification 1314189 and is described in the abridgment thereof. Some of the other embodiments described which utilise a recess means rather than an aperture means 32, are also described in the above mentioned specification.
