Abstract
1313577 Rolling mills; making strip; grinding NISSHIN STEEL CO Ltd 7 Aug 1970 [15 Oct 1969 14 Jan 1970] 38119/70 Headings B3A B3D and B3M A continuous cold rolling mill plant comprises a set of cluster rolling mill stands 7-10 in tandem to roll metal strip whose leading and trailing ends are welded together and the rolling pressure is decreased as the weld passes between the work rolls for each stand. The strips are supplied alternately from uncoilers 1, 2 and pass through an end cut-shear 3 to taper the end for welding and through a welder 4. The weld bead may be removed by grinding wheels 51, 52, Fig. 4, which traverse the strip while the strip is held stationary. A strip accumulator 5 is provided at at least the entry to the tandem mill stands. The strip is tensioned by two-high rolling stands 6, 11. Each cluster mill may comprise a six, twelve or twenty-high stand. The mill has a conventional screw-down 25 for the upper work roll and hydraulic adjustment for the lower work roll. Hydraulic fluid is supplied from a tank 33 through a electromagnetically operated valve 36 to a cylinder 30. A piston in the cylinder 30 compresses hydraulic fluid in the line to the cylinder 26. Normally a stop valve 28 is closed so that the cylinder 20 is pressurized. Before passing a weld the valve 28 is opened to allow flow to an hydraulic accumulator 27. The valve 36 may also be operated simultaneously.
