Abstract

1313177 Paper MANUFACTURE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES PROTEX 29 May 1970 [30 May 1969] 25955/70 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] The wet strength and pigment retention of paper is improved by treatment with water soluble cationic thermosetting resin prepared by reaction of a carboxyl terminated polyester resin with an epoxy-amine addition product of a polyepoxide and a polyalkylene polyamine, and subsequent condensation of the reaction product with epichlorohydrin. The polyester may be prepared by reaction of 1 mole of saturated or unsaturated C 3-10 dicarboxylic acid with a 0.5-1.0 moles of a glycol containing primary or secondary OH groups. The polyepoxide may be a glycidyl ether of a polyhydric alcohol or phenol, e.g. bisphenol A. The amine may be of formula: in which R is ethylene, propylene or butylene and x is at least 1. The polyester may be reacted with the epoxy-amine product, in proportions such that 0.05-0.2 free COOH groups are present per reactive hydrogen atom, at <130‹C. In the final step at least 0.5 moles of epichlorohydrin may be used per reactive hydrogen atom. The nitrogen atoms present may be converted to the quaternary state in aqueous or water-alcohol solutions. Paper may be treated either by impregnation of finished paper or by addition of the resin to the head box of a paper forming machine prior to formation of the web. From 0.1-5% by wt. of resin may be used which is subsequently dried and hardened.
