Abstract

1312710 Electro-physical measurement COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE and CENTRE SCIENTIFIQUE ET TECHNIQUE DU BATIMENT 7 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969] 58056/70 Heading G1N The thickness of a metallic coating on the inner or outer surface of a cylindrical metal tube 1, e. g. galvanized iron tube, is measured by applying an A. C. to excitation coil 2 coaxial with the tube 1 and detecting the voltage induced in detection coil 3, arranged coaxial with coil 2 and nearest the coating, in the presence and absence of the tube The ratio of the two measured values is a function of the coating thickness. The oscillator frequency is adjusted so that the skin thickness of the coating is at least equal to the thickness of the coating. Initially in the absence of the tube the output e 3 from differential amplifier 13 connected via amplifier 9 and rectifier 10 to detector coil 3 and reference voltage e 2 is nulled. The probe 2, 3 is then inserted in or around the tube depending on the position of the coating and the output voltage as indicated on meter 12 as a measure of coating thickness. The difference voltage e 3 is also applied after amplification at 16 to one input of a trigger circuit 17 so that if voltage e 4 is less than the preset reference voltage applied to the other input lamp 19 lights. Curves of Ho/Hi, where Hi is magnetic field along the tube axis in the presence of the shield and Ho the field in the absence of the tube, against thickness at various frequencies are described together with their derivation, Fig. 2 (not shown).
