Abstract

1312236 Welding by pressure INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO OF GREAT BRITAIN Ltd 4 June 1970 [4 June 1969] 28274/69 Heading B3R [Also in Division H4] A method of forming and simultaneously testing a friction welded joint comprises applying ultrasonic vibrations to the workpiece during the welding operation and utilizing the waveform from the weld region to indicate the nature of the weld and/or to control the pressure and relative movement of the parts being welded. The ultrasonic vibration transmitter and receiver are preferably mounted in a part, e.g. ram 6, which imparts axial movement to one of the components 1, 2 to be welded. A probe 8 is mounted by a swivel joint 9 in a recess 7 in the end of the ram and is spring biased to a projecting inoperative position, retraction of the probe on contact with the workpiece 2 causing the ultrasonic vibrations to be generated. The received waveform may be displayed on an oscilloscope and the change of waveform associated with satisfactory completion of the weld may be detected and used to arrest the movement of the ram 6.
