Abstract

1312123 Brake valves WESTINGHOUSE BREMSENUND APPARATEBAU GmbH 13 July 1970 [12 July 1969] 33831/70 Heading F2F An air brake valve for use in a three-circuit air braking system has respective inlets 1, 2, 3 and outlets 4, 5, 6 connected to actuate brake cylinders when a disc 30 is moved downwardly by a brake pedal compressing a rubber shockabsorbing member 32 and depressing a piston 24. A sealing face 29 is provided on piston 24 which firstly closes communication between an outlet duct 10 and atmosphere through a star-shaped rod 22 and immediately after opens a valve 11, 12 to connect inlet duct 9 and outlet 10 of the first circuit. Air then passes through a port 53 provided in a partition 7 causing two pistons 35, 38 to move downwardly cutting off communication between atmosphere and outlet 5 and thereafter opening valve 41, 42 and connecting inlet 2 and outlet 5. Air in this second circuit passes through a port 54 in a second partition 8 depressing a piston 46 which closes off the atmosphere connection and then opens valve 49, 50 to establish communication between inlet 3 and outlet 6 of the third circuit. If the first brake circuit fails a threaded rod 28 carried by disc 30 engages rod 22 which is carried downwardly until it abuts piston 38 and causes valve 41, 42 to open. If the second brake circuit fails, control piston 35 is charged with air from the first circuit as described previously but as no counterpressure acts on piston 35, piston 38 and a push-rod 22 move down until rod 22 actuates a push-rod 47 and thus piston 46 of the third brake circuit. The pressure build-up in chamber 10 in conjunction with compression spring 26 acts upon the lower face of piston 24 which tends to move again so as to provide an indication at the pedal of braking pressure being applied.
