Abstract

1311673 Electro-photography MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 12 May 1970 [12 March 1969] 12905/69 Heading G2H [Also in Division B6] A gravure printing plate 12 is provided with means to induce electro-phoretic migration of pigment particles 30 in ink 31 in its cells 13, so that the ink in the upper parts of the cells 13, which is transferred to paper 19 in printing, contains either an increased or a depleted content of particles 30. The printing plate may be an imaged one, the density of whose imprint is to be varied, or may be uniformly provided with cells 13 and be imaged electro-photographically by action of light on photo-conductive material in the bases of the cells 13, or on photo-conductive pigment in the ink 31, in either of which cases the light reaches the cells 13 through a transparent base material. The ink 31 may contain two colours of pigment particles 30, with opposed electro-phoretic behaviour, so that a two-colour imprint is formed, and the electrostatic field applied by electrode 16 may be varied at a frequency in excess of 2,000 cycles/second to provide a smooth graduation of colour.
