Abstract

1311643 Valves ROCKWELL MFG CO 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970] 24394/71 Heading F2V A gate valve has seats 24, 25 urged against an apertured screw-actuated gate 40 by sealing rings 86 and provided with annular grooves 81 and passages 83 to communicate sealing reservoirs 91, 92 with grooves 45, 46 in the gate when the latter is closed. Provided around each seat is a skirt 32, 33 which is relatively axially movable with respect to the seat and has a low friction surface 74, e.g. coated with P.T.F.E. in contact with the gate. When the gate is closed the upstream seat is urged by line pressure against the gate which bears on the downstream skirt, the downstream seat being spaced therefrom, and lubricant is forced by piston 93, 94 under upstream pressure to move lubricant out of the reservoir to the upstream side of the gate. When the reservoir 91, 92 is empty the conical end of the piston seats in the bore of plug 95, 96 to seal the seat from line pressure. The gate may have in addition grooves on opposite sides which communicate with the sealant passages in the seats in gate open position.
