Abstract

1311397 Treating charge; recycling exhaust gases FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 26 Nov 1971 [21 Dec 1970J 54933/71 Heading F1B An I. C. engine exhaust gas recycling mechanism comprises a poppet valve 75, Fig. 4 mounted in a housing on which is pivoted a lever 28, Fig. 2, carrying a pivotally mounted cam 31, means for pivoting the lever to move the cam surface relative to the poppet valve and means for pivoting the cam relative to the lever to change the portion of the cam surface adjacent the poppet valve. When the engine is not operating high pressure in the intake manifold acts through vacuum motor 40 to rotate lever 28 fully clockwise to move cam 31 away from valve 66 so that at starting exhaust gas ducted to chamber 73 cannot be fed to the inlet manifold through passages 76, 80, 82, 88. During cold starting the temperature sensing mechanism of an automatic choke pivots tang 58 so that a latch portion prevents the lever 28 from moving the cam into contact with the valve 66. When the engine is warm the lever is released. Cam 30 is pivoted in dependence on the position of a throttle valve (38), Fig. 1 (not shown) in the inlet manifold so that the position of valve 66 is determined in accordance with inlet manifold pressure and throttle position. When valve 66 is depressed exhaust gases flow to the inlet manifold and engine crank-case gases can also flow directly through passage 78. The conduit for the crankcase gases may include a valve. In modifications the carburetter venturi vacuum can be used as the input signal to the vacuum motor. Tong 58 can be positioned by a separate temperature sensing element and may be stepped to provide varying degrees of temperature lockout. The mechanism may be applied to a fuel injection system.
