Abstract

1310691 Laminated fibre webs CURLATOR CORP 8 June 1970 [14 July 1969] 27523/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] The non-woven webs described may be stitched to woven fabrics to form a laminate. A bulky, porous, resilient air-laid web comprises randomly orientated fibres of at least two types, one type being shrinkable, after treatment with heat, water (including steam) or sodium hydroxide solution (in the case of natural cellulosic fibres), so that the shrinkable fibres loop and curl, thereby locking together adjacent fibres. Some fibres extend substantially from the upper surface to the lower surface. The web may be needled before the fibres are shrunk. The shrinkable staple fibres, which preferably comprise 30-40% of the total, may be natural cellulose, plasticized cellulose acetate, rayon, cellulose triacetate acrylonitrile, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride/polyvinyl acetate copolymer, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide, polytetrafluoroethylene or copolymers thereof, or bicomponent triacetate/nylon 6 or acrylonitrile/acrylonitrile. Continuous filaments of two types of polyvinyl chloride, the inner component being more shrinkable, may also be used. The other staple fibre may comprise less shrinkable grades of the above mentioned fibres, wool, vegetable, metal, glass or water soluble alginate polysaccharide fibres. The web may be reinforced by continuous filaments of acrylonitrile or polyester, which may be in the form of a net, or a woven scrim. Layered webs may be air-laid using the apparatus of 1,238,923. A mixture of metal, wool and shrinkable acrylic fibres from the outer randomizing chambers, and a mixture of shrinkable and non-shrinkable acrylic fibres from the centre chamber fall towards the gap between two rotating porous drums, a vacuum being applied to the inside of the drums. The web so formed is needled and then heat shrunk. In another embodiment continuous filaments are fed to the centre of the forming web at a faster rate than the web is produced. The air current carrying the filaments and staple fibres towards the rotating drums is given a perpendicular component, producing waves in the filaments in the width and thickness directions. A non-smooth surface may result from the shrinkage, or from passage of the web through a calender where one roll is heated and embossed, and has a different surface speed to the other roll. The webs may be spray-bonded.
