Abstract

1310355 Hot tops and linings for ingot moulds; preventing piping in castings FOSECO TRADING AG 18 June 1970 [3 July 1969] 33661/69 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions B5 and D1] A hot top or lining for an ingot mould or an anti-piping cover comprises a laminate produced by needling a sandwich of fibrous sheets and inorganic material. As exemplified, a flexible rayon/newspaper/rice husk/muslin/rayon laminate 10 mm. thick was formed and employed as a hot top with the rayon/newspaper side (previously coated with colloidal silica) presented to molten steel poured into a mould at 1650‹ C. The laminate was attached to the mould wall by stapling, sticking or nailing. A thicker lining in the form of two layers of the laminate sewn, stapled, or cemented together can be employed. The use of a rayon fibre/silica flour/rayon fibre laminate as a hot top is also disclosed. An exothermic composition may be included in the laminate. A sheet of laminate may be used as an insulating or exothermic anti-piping cover. Such a cover can include both an exothermic and an insulating layer of laminate.
